First, make sure you get to a familiar place like home (If you are out, wait till you arrive home to take the wrap off, even if its been 2 hours.) Wash your hands thoroughly. Then remove the wrap.
Using clean hands only, work up a lather of antibacterial hand soap and wash your tattoo with lukewarm water. Be sure to get off all product that was applied when I wrapped it, and any sliminess (that’s plasma. Make sure you wash that off to prevent it hardening into a scab)
The most crucial part of this process is to alllow your tattoo to now air dry completely before moving into the next step. This will help prevent the tattoo from locking moisture under the aftercare which commonly creates issues. If you are in a rush you may use a clean single use paper towel to PAT dry.
A pea sized amount of your chosen aftercare should be applied and rubbed completely into the tattoo. If you can visibly see streaks or glossiness, you have applied too much. Too much aftercare can actually elongate the healing process.
Do not re-rebandage your tattoo! Your tattoo needs to breathe! If you need to cover it for any reason, a loose long sleeve Tee or pants should suffice. Do not expose your tattoo to sun or submerge your tattoo in water for at least 3 weeks or until completely peeled.
Wash your tattoo 1-2 times daily (more if you are sweating or getting dirty), allow to air dry for 10-15 minutes, apply aftercare. You will do this routine daily for at least 3 week or until the tattoo is completely peeled.
Your tattoo may seem a bit raised at first. Or your tattoo once healed may raise when it comes into dermatological irritants (think dry weather, perfumes, bug bites)
There is pigment sitting under your skin and the process has technically scarred your skin. It is normal for the tattoo to respond this way.
I recommend Eucerin as an easy to acquire and sensitive skin aftercare for all my clients. There are also good aftercares made specifically for tattoos but will have to be ordered online before your appointmen. These include AfterInked, Recovery, Sorry Mom and Inkeeze.
There are aftercare products I suggest avoiding completely. Some of these can be very damaging to the tattoo.
I do not recommend the following list:
Vaseline, Neosporin, Aquaphor, A&D, Tattoo Goo, Essential Oils.
Your sticky derm shield should be left on the tattoo no longer than 7 days accumulatively. (If you changed it out, it still counts as one piece!)
You need to remove the derm shield. The seal protecting your tattoo has been broken. Please do not try to just patch this leak.
Getting in the shower is the easiest, mess free way. Soap up a corner and gently pull downward. The Recovery derm is very stretchy. It should easily come free. Once it comes off, wash your tattoo completely. Remove all of the slimy plasma. Allow to air dry for 10-15 minutes before placing a new piece on.
If you had to remove the shield before 7 days, you will heal the tattoo by traditional means. (See the above aftercare for instructions)
You’ll find that the tattoo is either completely or nearly completely healed by the 7th day. You can switch to a non scented hand lotion to moisturize your tattoo. As long as its completely peeled with no scabs, you can continue life like normal!
Sometimes with a good, strong seal comes minor irritation around the border of the derm shield. This happens because your skin is trying to move with everyday use, but there’s now a piece of plastic preventing it. Think of this more like a chaffing of a tight fitting shoe. This irritation should be minor and cause you no issues. (Sometimes even small fluid bubbles appear around the border of the derm. Not on the tattoo) If redness and swelling increases, please remove the shield and contact me asap.
